A good share of outlet repair calls turn out to be a two-minute fix. We would rather you find it yourself than pay a call-out for a reset button.
This is the big one. A single GFCI protects every outlet downstream of it, so a dead bedroom or living room receptacle is very often a GFCI that tripped in the bathroom, the garage, the laundry or on an exterior wall. Walk the house, look for the outlet with test and reset buttons, and press reset.
A tripped breaker often sits in a middle position that looks switched on at a glance. Push it firmly all the way off, then back on. If it will not stay on, leave it off and call a licensed electrician — that is a fault, not a stiff switch.
In a lot of Fayetteville homes, one half of a living room or bedroom receptacle is switched for a lamp. If the top socket works and the bottom does not, or the whole thing comes alive when you flip a switch, that is by design.

If your home was built before the mid-1970s there is a fair chance it has none at all. The exact requirements depend on the code edition your jurisdiction enforces, which we confirm rather than assume.

They are three different devices. GFCI protects people from shock by detecting current going somewhere it should not. AFCI protects the building by detecting arcing faults. Dual-function devices do both, and some circuits now require both.
A device that trips repeatedly is usually finding something real. New AFCI breakers in particular often trip on older circuits because they detect conditions the old breaker never looked for. The answer is to find what it is objecting to, not to fit a plain breaker and pretend the problem went away.
Common in this housing stock, and there is a code-compliant fix short of rewiring: a GFCI can be fitted on an ungrounded circuit and labelled to show there is no equipment ground. Be clear about what that gives you — real shock protection, yes; a true ground for sensitive electronics and surge protection, no. If a lot of the house is like this, whole-home rewiring is the fuller answer.
Weather-resistant devices in in-use bubble covers that stay closed with a cord plugged in, on protected circuits. Height matters too: outdoor receptacles should be reachable from the ground and generally sit no higher than about 6½ feet above grade or a deck surface.
New receptacles in rooms that never had enough, and 20-amp dedicated circuits for a window unit, a chest freezer, a workshop tool or a home office that keeps tripping. Adding load is where the panel conversation sometimes starts.

Outlet repair done properly is not swapping the device and leaving. It is also why the same outlet is dead again in eight months. Here is what we look for instead.
Trace the circuit, find the failure point, and tell you whether it is a device, a connection or the circuit itself. Then a licensed electrician fixes the cause and the outlet together.
If what we find points at something bigger — ungrounded wiring throughout, a panel with no capacity left, cloth insulation shedding in the boxes — you get told that plainly, with the smaller option first where one exists.

Usually that it is doing its job and something downstream has a genuine fault, or that the device itself has failed. Do not keep pressing it. If anything is warm, buzzing or smells, stop and call rather than resetting again.
Three: leave them, fit GFCI protection and label the outlets as having no equipment ground, or rewire those circuits properly. The GFCI route is code-compliant and far cheaper, but it gives you shock protection rather than a true ground.
